Sen. Ron Johnson has released a new interim report examining how federal health officials responded to early COVID-19 vaccine safety signals during the Biden administration. The report, released alongside a Senate hearing titled “Unmasked: How Biden Health Officials Purposely Turned a Blind Eye Toward COVID-19 Vaccine Safety Signals,” includes hundreds of pages of records related to FDA and CDC vaccine safety monitoring efforts.
According to the report, FDA officials became aware in early 2021 of enhanced data-mining methods that could potentially identify statistically significant adverse-event safety signals associated with COVID-19 vaccines. The report alleges that existing systems with known limitations continued to be used instead.
The hearing and report have added to ongoing debates surrounding vaccine safety monitoring, transparency, myocarditis concerns, and the federal government’s public health response during the pandemic. Critics of the report argue that some of the claims rely on disputed interpretations of vaccine safety data, while supporters say the findings raise legitimate oversight and transparency questions.
