How are parents supposed to fully trust autism research when controversies involving researchers continue to raise difficult questions?

Danish scientist Poul Thorsen, a former researcher involved in CDC-funded autism studies, was extradited from Germany to the United States in May 2026 after spending more than a decade evading federal authorities. Thorsen was originally indicted in 2011 on multiple counts of wire fraud and money laundering after prosecutors alleged he stole more than $1 million in CDC research grant funds intended for autism-related studies. According to federal investigators, Thorsen allegedly forged documents and redirected grant money into personal accounts, using the funds for personal expenses including vehicles and real estate.[1][2][3]

Thorsen had reportedly been living in Denmark following the indictment before being arrested by German authorities in June 2025 while vacationing with his wife. Acting on an Interpol red notice, German officials detained him, and after nearly a year of legal challenges in German courts, he was ultimately extradited to the United States under the supervision of U.S. authorities. He has since appeared in federal court in Atlanta to face charges related to financial crimes tied to misuse of federal research funding.[2][4]

The case has frequently been referenced in public debates surrounding vaccine safety and autism research because of Thorsen’s involvement in prominent CDC-funded studies. However, federal prosecutors have emphasized that the charges against Thorsen concern alleged financial fraud and money laundering, not scientific misconduct or falsification of vaccine research data.
