Eugenics is a set of beliefs and practices aimed at improving the genetic quality of a human population, often through the promotion of reproduction among those deemed “superior” and the restriction of reproduction among those considered “inferior.” This movement gained traction in the late 19th century, particularly in the United Kingdom and the United States, where it influenced policies such as forced sterilizations and marriage restrictions targeting marginalized groups, including the poor, disabled, and certain racial communities. Notably, Nazi Germany adopted extreme eugenic practices, leading to the involuntary sterilization and mass murder of individuals labeled as “undesirable.” While early eugenics was often framed as a progressive social movement, it has since become associated with scientific racism and human rights violations, and yet it is still practiced.
Over 60,000 American citizens were sterilized as part of the American Eugenics Movement many who were illegality detained and incarcerated in work farms and forced to labor at little to no pay. My father was one of them. I was created out of the depths of the evil of Eugenics.
